Eliot Andrew Stone is a travel writer, photographer, musician, and artist. As a travel writer and photographer, Eliot developed his craft for over a decade while living and traveling in more than 20 countries. His first published work – Genuine Tuvan: Producing Authenticity in the Republic of Tuva – explores the lives of musicians, artists, public officials, and people of the everyday in the Siberian Republic of Tuva and their strategies for confronting the post-Soviet social and economic crisis.
As a musician, Eliot’s expertise resides in two primary musical forms: the didgeridoo: an Australian Aboriginal musical instrument, and khoomei: a style of vocal performance from the Siberian Republic of Tuva. Eliot developed as a didgeridoo player performing in European venues and while visiting Yolngu Aboriginal communities in Northern Territory, Australia. With over 15 years of didgeridoo performance experience, Eliot contributes his didgeridoo stylings to cross-genre musical collaborations as well as providing spirited solo performances.
As a practitioner of Tuvan khoomei, Eliot is recognized as one of the world’s leading amateur performers. After over 10 years of dedicated practice and instruction from professional Tuvan singers, Eliot competed during the 5th International Khoomei Symposium in the Republic of Tuva and was awarded first prize. Eliot continues to perform internationally and contributes his knowledge as a professional instructor to musicians with interest in this rare musical art.
Eliot’s artistic endeavors focus primarily on the production of the Australian Aboriginal musical instrument, the didgeridoo. In 2009, Eliot underwent a didgeridoo craft apprenticeship with Djalu Gurruwiwi, master didgeridoo craftsman and cultural leader of the Galpu Clan of Yolngu Aboriginal people. Upon return to Texas, Eliot began producing didgeridoos from Texas hardwoods and agave cactus with full permission and support of Yolngu craftspersons. His works are featured in art galleries, collections, and exhibits internationally.
Eliot is available for writing and photographic projects, musical performances, workshops, collaborations, and educational talks and lectures; his artworks are available for exhibit in galleries and collections worldwide.
